About the item

1802 Medieval Geoffrey of Monmouth STONEHENGE King Arthur Merlin England Folklore Geoffrey of Monmouth was an 11th-century British cleric who played an integral role in the popularity of the tales of King Arthur. In 1136, Geoffrey wrote an historical account of British History entitled “Historia Regum Britanniae”; however, since the 1700s, this work has been discredited as being historically accurate. But even though its historical accurate is left wanting, it is no less desirable as a work of important medieval context. Geoffrey’s ‘History’ contains the earliest known version of the story of King Lear and the legend of King Arthur. This famous book also includes a story of the construction of Stonehenge making references to the legendary wizard Merlin who brought the stones from Ireland. At the end of the 18th-century James Easton published Geoffrey’s account of Stonehenge – a widely popular book of English history and folklore!
