About the item

He was just twenty years old and 710 home runs away from the career total that would stand for nearly four decades at the time this postcard was produced. Though Ruth's remarkable slugging skills were still a novelty, it was the eighteen-and-eight pitching record recorded during this official rookie season of 1915 that made the youngster a fan favorite at Fenway. Spectacular pitching, in fact, was the pathway to the pennant for this Red Sox team, with all five starters recording a winning percentage of .682 or better, and an earned run average of 2.44 or lower. In the Babe's official rookie season, the Red Sox earned a Fall Classic appearance by a two and a half game margin. It was Ruth himself who registered the team's 101st that would clinch the pennant. We suspect that this scarce real photo postcard greeted hometown fans at Braves Field for the third and fourth games of the World Series, the National League stadium borrowed due to a seating capacity superior to the newly-constructed Fenway Park. Text at the bottom edge of the team image suggests production prior to the team's World Championship realization, reading,  Each Red Sox player is pictured and identified with surname and position in bold printed text. We find Ruth at center of the back row. Graded  . A trio of creases and a pair of short scissor cuts account for the SGC rating, as the image area is crisp and well-defined. The postcard reverse is unusually and desirably free of handwriting. HID07601242017
