Last origin Jacksonville FL and last known owner was artist Carl Ashby. Excellent condition. Thanks for looking. NEW YORK TIMES OBITUARY HENRY BOTKIN DIES ABSTRACT PAINTER By MICHAEL BRENSON Published: March 5, 1983 Henry Botkin, an abstract painter known for his collage-paintings, his promotion of abstract art and his artistic influence on his cousin, the composer George Gershwin, died yesterday in New York City of heart disease. He was 86 years old. Mr. Botkin began painting in a lyrical mode that depended upon an expressive use of color. Later in his career, in the 1950's, he sought a greater sense of surprise and structure, and found in collage a way of strengthening what was suggested by his lyrical and always somewhat naturalistic use of color. Mr. Botkin was born in Boston and received his formal art training in Boston and New York. In 1926 he went to Paris, which remained his base for seven years. During frequent trips back to the United States, Mr. Botkin encouraged George Gershwin to take up painting. He also served as his cousin's informal painting instructor and as an adviser for his art collecting. Painted 'Porgy and Bess' In 1934, the cousins went together to Folly Island, S.C., where Mr. Gershwin composed ''Porgy and Bess'' and Mr. Botkin painted visual counterparts for the opera. Mr. Botkin's paintings were exhibited after the opera was performed one was bought by the Metropolitan Museum. Mr. Botkin had more than 40 one-man shows. Over the years, he was president of several organizations, including American Abstract Artists. His work is in the permanent collections of more than 40 museums, including the Metropolitan, the Museum of Modern Art, the Phillips Collection in Washington, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Satisfaction Guaranteed, “A very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV” Maximlien de Bethune was a 16th-century French statesman who was the first Duke of Sully. Most known for his service under Henry IV of France, Sully left a collection of memoirs which is now a valuable and important work on the history of France during the reign of Henry the Great. Even though ‘Memoires’ contains many fictitious stories, it is still recognized for its accuracy and portrayal of European royalty. The most controversial section of ‘Memoires’ is Sully’s vision of a utopian society designed for all of Europe. He envisioned a Christian republic that was governed by a ‘Very Christian Council’ in which all differences were resolved and a military was complete removed. Some scholars even claim that Sully’s plan helped establish what would become the current European Union. Waschi and cast by Robert Wood. 17 x 21 1/2, on Japan paper 22 1/2 x 28 1/2". 1628 Medicine & Anatomy of Andre Du Laurens Henry IV Goiter Tuberculosis 2in1
Andre du Laurens was a French physician primarily known for his ‘History of Anatomy’. As the personal physician to Marie de Medici and King Henry IV, du Laurens composed many of his treatises on medicine, most of which went through many variations and editions. He wrote extensively on tuberculosis and the lymph nodes of the neck, a disease that was very common during his time. Du Laurens wrote how the ‘King’s Evil’ couldn’t simply be cured by a ‘royal touch’ even though King Henry IV would regularly touch those inflicted with disease in hopes of curing them. Garrison-Morton also claims that Du Laurens provided one of the earliest records of the goiter, which he maintained as a contagious ailment. This rare 1628 printing of the works of Du Laurens was published by Durand and incorporates both volumes in one fine tome. The first volumes is the entire ‘History of Anatomy’ and the second volume is the rest of his known works. Many of the works in this printing feature a Latin translation from the original French including quotations in Greek. $750.00 In stock Add to cart Free shipping wordwide! 1683 King Henry VIII England Life & Reign Martin Luther Anglican Reformation
“Two beheadings out of six wives is too many.” – Henry VIII of England Edward Herbert was the first Baron of Cherbury during the 17th-century and was an important Anglo-Welsh historian and philosopher. While mostly-known for his treatises on metaphysics, he also composed historical accounts of the kings of England. ‘The Life and Reign of King Henry VIII’ covers a wide range of topics and events occurring during early 16th-century England. Important topics include Catholic influence of Thomas Wolsey, physical changes made to Westminster Cathedral, laws allowing white meat to be eaten during Lent, various treaties signed by Henry VIII, decrees and lives of Popes Julius II and Leo X, rise of Maximillian in the Holy League, a brief discussion on the Council of Trent, Thomas Cromwel and Thomas Cranmer, and much more! However, the most important section in this book is Henry VIII’s interactions with Martin Luther – his opposition to Catholic indulgences, burning of books, abolishment of old mass and composition of new Protestant liturgies, and his appeals to the General Council. According to Lowndes, “This work has been ever esteemed one of the best histories in the English language”. $950.00 In stock Add to cart Free shipping wordwide! Typed Letter Signed by HENRY OSBORNE HAVEMEYER
HAVEMEYER, HENRY OSBORNE. (1847-1907). American industrialist, art collector and president of the American Sugar Refining Company. TLS. ("H. O. Havemeyer"). 1p. 12mo. New York, February 19, 1902. On his 11 Wall Street stationery. To ROBERT E. MANROSS (1852-1932), president of the New Haven coal wholesaler Benedict & Pardee Co. "Thank you very much for your goodness in returning my card case, found on the elevated train." Henry belonged to the third generation of the Havermeyer family involved in the sugar industry, which he entered as a 15-year-old apprentice in 1863. A decade later, he was in charge of the New York City-based family business. The decades after the Civil War saw intense competition in sugar refining due to overproduction that resulted in depressed prices. Havemeyer established the Sugar Trust in 1887 to control pricing and production. After its legality was challenged, the Sugar Trust morphed into the American Sugar Refining Company, a holding company and processed 98% of the sugar in America. In 1900, it became Domino Sugar. Suits challenging the company's monopoly on sugar refining continued after Havemeyer's death well into the 1920s. Havemeyer and his wife Louisine were inexhaustible art collectors, bequeathing to New York's Metropolitan Museum nearly 2,000 works, the bulk of which forms part of that institution's Impressionist collection and includes works by Degas, Monet and Cassatt. Portions of their vast collection are also on view at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, founded by their daughter Electra Havemeyer Webb, also a prominent art collector. Folded and trimmed just below the signature. Normal wear and in very good condition. Uncommon. * All our items are sent via Federal Express. Additional postage may be requested.Read more

William Henry Harrison & Anna Harrison Rare Dual Signed 1810 Indenture
Offered here is a large and impressive document dual-signed by William Henry Harrison and Anna Harrison, measuring 13.75" x 16.5" and dated July 17, 1810. The document is an indenture documenting the sale of property owned by Mrs. Harrison in the Township of Walpack in the state of New Jersey, with the Harrisons receiving the sum of $1,230 for 123 acres of land to one Ira Fuller. The document is partially filled out in hand by a county recorder and nicely hand signed by both Harrisons at the bottom of the front side (with William Henry Harrison signing as "Wllm. Henry Harrison"). The document exhibits some uneven edges and scattered toning spots but stands in overall superb condition, especially given it's age and size (as many documents this size have encountered some form of damage). Any document signed by William Henry Harrison is scarce, with dual-signed documents from he and his wife being exceedingly rare and desirable. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).Read more
