Birger Carlstedt was a Finnish visual artist who studied at the Finnish Art Society’s Drawing School and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki. He also took several trips to study in France and his Paris debut was in 1930.
Carlstedt has been described as a Finnish pioneer of abstract painting. In the 1930s and 1940s, he painted constructivist landscapes and still lifes in distinct colors. Carlstedt's art is often based on the golden section and is correctly constructed from a mathematical standpoint. His art is a blend of tradition with new abstract elements.
Today a large collection of Carlstedt’s art is on display at the Amos Anderson Art Museum in Helsinki, to which he donated his paintings.
