Horse-Drawn Sleigh in Winter - Frederick Simpson Coburn

Lot # 309 Canadian Landscapes: Group of Seven & their Contemporaries Online auction Frederick Simpson Coburn AAM RCA 1871 - 1960 Canadian Horse-Drawn Sleigh in Winter oil on canvas signed and dated 1929 16 x 26 in 40.6 x 66cm Provenance: Dominion Gallery, Montreal Private Collection, Ottawa Sold sale of Fine Canadian Art, Heffel Fine Art Auction House, May 27, 2004, lot 28 Private Collection, Toronto By 1929, recognition and success were firmly established for Frederick Coburn. In 1928 he was elected a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, and he exhibited at the Imperial Gallery of Art in London, and the National Gallery of Canada. Although Coburn trained in Germany and Paris, he was influenced by the fresh colour and light of the revolutionary Impressionists. The painting he exhibited in 1929 with the Art Association of Montreal won the Jessie Dow prize. In earlier years, innovative Quebec painters such as J.W. Morrice, Maurice Cullen and Coburn had difficulty in finding acceptance for their work due to the prevailing bias towards traditional European painting. However, the Group of Seven awakened appreciation for the Canadian landscape, and Watson Art Gallery in Montreal built a market for Coburn’s winter scenes. Please note: on verso is a sheet stating that this work was cleaned and lined in January, 1975 by Dominion Gallery, Montreal. Fortin was a daring experimenter in his work. He used intense, arresting colours against black and grey backgrounds, employing bold contrasts and white highlights. His work can be described as a decorative type of Fauvism, wherein brilliant colours are used within the parameters of carefully thought out compositions with lyrical lines and accenting patterns. In this work, the fence line repeats the accenting strokes of white in the sky, and Fortin's brushwork has areas of consistent patterning that unify the work overall. His delicate treatment of the lines of the tree limbs and their endmost branches exemplify Fortin's skill with the large, lush trees which he often sought out to paint. The delicate raw umber leaves, which drip down from the uppermost edges of the work, are especially fine. Heffel
