A Lady in a Beach Chair Signed Isaac Israels lower right Provenance Private collection, The Netherlands; Sale Sotheby’s Amsterdam, 19th Century European Paintings, April 20 2004, lot 233. Oil on canvas 49,5 by 60 cm.  Isaac Israels was one of the founders of Amsterdam Impressionism, a movement that blossomed in the Netherlands during the last quarter of the 19th century. He acquired great fame with his paintings of mundane city life. Fashion houses, crowded streets, parks, dance halls and beaches were his favourite sources of inspiration and he painted them in a colourful, exuberant style. He sought to capture life, to hold the moment that struck him, and this spontaneity still emanates form his paintings. The current lot shows a chic girl in a colourful kimono over a black bathing suit, sporting a fashionably short crop, enjoying the sun in her lounge chair – exactly as the painter enjoyed the moment which he depicted.
