A fine pair of 50-bore percussion silver mounted Scottish belt pistols
A fine pair of 50-bore percussion silver mounted Scottish belt pistols by Mortimer, 6.5inch three-stage blued barrels, faceted at the breeches and muzzles, finely engraved with a panel of scrolling foliage and a stand of arms at the mid-point, border and scroll engraved steel lock plates, the hammers decorated to match, full silver stocks decorated with panels of foliate and roped decoration along the fore-ends and with panels of scrolling foliage to the ram's horn butts and undersides, the back straps each detailed with an oval escutcheon bearing the details MORTIMER LONDON and the off sides with a panel bearing a thistle, belt hooks mounted on the left side, ball triggers, turned and milled ramrods, the butts with prickers. <br>These pistols retain good amounts of original blued finish to the barrels. Probably by Thomas Jackson Mortimer, they are illustrated in H. Lee Munson's book The Mortimer Gunmakers 1753-1923 on page 109 and described on page 110. With regards to date Munson states "They appear to have been made circa 1830 which is within his lifespan and they are certainly of very high quality and good workmanship."
